Responsible gambling
Gambling should be entertainment you can afford. When it stops being that, help is free and confidential.
You must be at least 18 to gamble. Never wager money you need for rent, bills or food, and never gamble to win back what you have lost.
Set your limits before you play
Every licensed operator is required to offer limit tools, and they work best when you set them while you are calm rather than mid session.
- Deposit limit. A daily, weekly or monthly ceiling on what you can put in.
- Loss limit. Caps what you can lose in a period, regardless of how much you deposit.
- Session limit. Logs you out after a set time.
- Reality check. A recurring reminder of how long you have been playing.
- Time out. Locks the account for a short period, typically 24 hours to six weeks.
- Self exclusion. Closes the account for months or years and cannot be reversed early.
Lowering a limit usually takes effect immediately, while raising it is delayed by design. That delay is a feature, not a bug.
Warning signs
Gambling has stopped being entertainment if you recognise several of these:
- You play longer or for more money than you planned.
- You chase losses, trying to win back what is gone.
- You borrow money, sell things or use money set aside for something else.
- You hide how much you play from people close to you.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
- Playing affects your sleep, your work, your studies or your relationships.
Where to get help
These services are free, confidential and independent of any operator.
- BeGambleAware: advice, self assessment and treatment referral.
- GamCare: helpline and live chat, open around the clock.
- Gambling Therapy: support in multiple languages, worldwide.
- Gamblers Anonymous: peer support groups, online and in person.
Blocking software such as Gamban, GamBlock or BetBlocker can stop gambling sites loading on your devices. If you are in a market with a national self exclusion register, signing up there covers every licensed operator at once rather than one account at a time.
Odds are not memory
Every spin and every hand is independent. A machine that has not paid out is not due, and a streak does not make the next outcome more or less likely. The house edge is built into the maths and does not change with how long you play. Any system sold as a way to beat it does not work.
